CHOOSING THE BEST RESIN FOR YOUR FIBERGLASS REPAIR PROJECTS
This is one of those decisions that can make the difference between the finishing steps of the project going smoothly or having to cobble together a path forward and keeping fingers crossed that it holds up ;-)
If you're interested in a more in depth break down of working with these materials, here's a link to the download guide that I mentioned. Please note that the download key may end up in your spam folder so if there's any issues take a peek there. If something didn't work please let me know and I'll email it to you!

WHAT ALEXSEAL MATERIALS TO USE AND HOW MUCH DO I NEED TO PAINT MY BOAT??
Просмотров 7 тыс.Месяц назад
Seems like Spring has finally sprung for the Eastern part of the Country (up North Winter pretty much dodged us this year somehow) and this is a question I get at least a couple dozen times per day so thought it a good idea to try and address on video. I just realized that was a bit of a pun :-) Overall things are going quite well and I hope to be back to normal much sooner than later, but I will know a lot more at my six week check up with the doctor, which is now roughly 5 weeks out. Gelcoat blisters below the waterline!! What's going on??
Просмотров 9 тыс.2 месяца назад
To be honest I think that these ongoing issues are the result of a manufacturing OOPSIES and the long term fix is going to be having the gelcoat peeled from the waterline down, or dealing with the Spring launch routine of chasing down the new gremlins as Tim's been doing each year :-/ How does something like that happen? Well, if I had to speculate I'd say that when the hull was being laid up t...

I will be building a 78-foot boat, Carbon fibre is one choice to make it out of, the other is Aluminium or stainless steel, I have not done any fibre glassing in the last 30 plus years, forgotten a lot of info. Thinking of using a slow setting resin, something like 12 hours to set and 24 hours to cure, will need to relearn about the colour gel coat, form work and none stick coating, I will take around 6 mth just to do the hull and maybe the decks and strengthens and bulk heads ECT, then the rest take up to 2 years to complete

I'm a big fan of your channel. You are a very good teacher. It answers so many questions I had on various topics related to fiberglass and painting. Thank you! One question I have, thar may be answered in the follow-ups of this video, is how you can detect you have sanded enough prior to applying a primer? Is it when there is no paint left, when the surface is smooth, or else? I'm afraid of removing too much, or not enough, by not knowing what to look for. Thanks again!

I have a 25B, my twin mercruisers were removed and replaced with a large single diesel moved fwd for the V shaft drive which improved the balance and handling of the boat. Acording to Ray Hunt, the balance point of the 25B is 10ft fwd of the stern, so thats where all heavy things should be installed.

Fuel tank. Im surprised you cant modify it to fit? Cut an inch out of it all round and stick it back together, thats how bertram make them. Or make your own from scratch, i think epoxy is ethanol proof. Alternatively you can gets tank made from plastic, they plastic weld the sheets together, mates got one in his 32ft diesel, he loves it.

  • @kizzjd9578
    @kizzjd9578 19 дней назад

Epoxy for bonding dissimilar materials, ester for laminating. If you cant do the whole job in one hit with epoxy, dont worry about it. Also epoxy turns yellow and breaks down from uv exposure and needs to be painted or clear coated with a gelcoat or 2pack spray.

Attacking a new to me process doing a balsa core in a race boat. My plan was gonna be epoxy over a honeycomb lightweight core. But I have lots of friends in the unlimited hydroplane racing world. And 2 of them who I greatly respect stopped and schooled me. I will be using balsa and vinylester. I have never used vinylester. I will be revisiting some of your older videos to refresh my memory. In my case I need to match the outer skin of my hull to a certain level on the inner skin over the core. Oh and vacuum bagging coming too. You might say I am over my head! But I am also chasing triple digits and wanna be as safe as possible. Hope you are feeling good with your shoulder.

I am confused. In your old video, you tested the gel coat over epoxy and concluded that it was totally fine. What has changed? ruclips.net/video/GwS4YgoGFm8/видео.html&ab_channel=BoatworksToday I don't try to be rude. As a new boater, I want to tackle a small project of closing holes from old instruments in the sailboat cockpit. As that referenced video showed up recently in my suggestions, I thought of using epoxy as It is a small patch. My considerations were: I already have epoxy, the same as in your old video; polyester has a short shelf time. I will have to throw away the can after the project as I will use only a small part for the project, and I hate throwing away stuff, especially when it contains harmful chemicals.

As a fiberglass tech of 45 years and having been certified by many of the major gel coat and fiberglass tech schools in the USA here is the real scoop. Blisters in a boat are always caused by uncured resin during the manufacturing process; gel coat is actually porous and when the vessel is kept in the water (usually standing warm water without much current) the water actually permeates through the hull and into the laminate below and mixes with that uncured resin and it creates an acid, that acid expands and expands through the gel coat barrier creating the blister. The only way to properly cure a boat that has a blister problem is to grind/dremel out the blister, clean, prep with acetone and then apply epoxy mixed with a filler like cabisil, then over coat with epoxy primer and bottom paint. If there are hundreds or thousands of blisters…you’ll need to use a peeler and remove all the gel coat from entire bottom and then roll & tip a few coats of epoxy to high build and then epoxy primer the entire bottom and then apply a bottom paint of your choice. I’ve literally done hundreds of blister boats and lightning strike boats that require the same procedure. For whatever reason Power Quest boats are notorious for having blisters.

Great video! When you mention the laminating window on epoxy, can you clarify that a bit more? I'm currently doing a very large repair with epoxy after recoring our whole deck, I've been laminating immediately after getting the air out of the layers. Is that too soon or is it fine since the whole thing cures together? We're working in the heat in Texas so I'm mostly trying to beat the epoxy before it flash sets. I do have to tie in the laminations since we're going about 6ft at a time, but I've been sanding back to taper them in together and so far it seems to have held.

I'm making a small model boat about 3ft long, and want to cover it in surface tissue with resin on the inside where the hull meets the shell...I already bought epoxy resin and RTU, but still not sure it is the correct choice. I will be doing one side first and then when it is dry, it will be ground back on the edges until it is just big enough and I can put the sides on, then when ll is done the outside will also get tissue and resin. Only want to paint the bottom facing bits where it might wear against surfaces... and varnish over resin the rest. SO I need to be able to not do it all in one go.

I'm not an engineer of composites, but with minimal welding experience i believe it may introduce possible integrity issues. Weird stuff goes on between apples and oranges.
